Caring for Kahurangi: charismatic kiwi and other legends
16th October 2025
A new book explores the history of a tiny portion of Kahurangi National Park looked after by volunteers for 25 years. Naomi Arnold talks to Caring for Kahurangi authors Sandy and Robin Toy.There’s a kiwi named Anatori hopefully roaming the forests of Kahurangi National Park who is, according to Robin Toy, “a real gent”. Introduced to the park in May 2010, Anatori is one of the roroa who Friends of Flora volunteers have gotten to know and love over the course of many years of monitoring. “When we had to catch him to change his transmitters, he just never put up any fuss at all,” Robin says.
